"Taking the Unpredictability Out of Power" presented by Jim Neumann, Vice President, Power Analytics Corporation
Experts estimate that 40% of all business downtime is the result of electrical power problems; in 80% of those cases, the power fault was the result of a completely avoidable on-premise problem. These cost America more than $150 billion per year in economic losses… exceeding flood, fires, earthquakes, lightning strikes, and weather-related damages combined. New analytical technologies are enabling mission-critical facility operators to understand the real-time health and safety of their power infrastructure… including identifying potential problems before they strike. In this presentation, we’ll discuss these technologies, and how demanding facility operators are using them to preempt problems long before business continuity is threatened.

"How to View Business Continuity from an Executive Perspective". Disasters don’t kill organizations; organizations kill organizations. That’s right; the failure of leaders to understand the value of preparedness leaves their institutions prepared to fail. It is up to us to educate executives and leaders on the importance of Business Continuity Planning to mitigate risk and to help them understand the crucial difference between Common Practice and Best Practice approaches.
Mary Carrido, founder and CEO of MLC & Associates, Inc., will facilitate an interactive working session in which the audience will discover whether there is a disconnect between their perspective and that of their leadership team. Ms. Carrido has over 23 years of experience managing and conducting disaster recovery and business resumption projects for cities, transportation agencies, utilities, financial institutions, telecommunications, distribution, hospitals, and manufacturing companies.

"Prepare OC: Web-Enabling County of Orange Incident Preparedness , Response and Recovery to Achieve True Organizational Collaboration”, presented by Lynne Halverson, Business Continuity Manager, County of Orange
Organizations and the people who work for them are often involved in multiple, overlapping, and competing initiatives. This type of redundancy is of little use when it comes to incident preparedness, response, and recovery planning and activities. Establishing a collaborative environment in which resources and communications are open and available to the entire organization – while also meeting disparate organizational needs – is critical to the success of any continuity program, be it large or small. This presentation will look at how the County of Orange developed PrepareOC, a secure, Web-based environment on which it is building a truly collaborative and comprehensive program. The site takes a holistic, regional approach to providing County agencies, Operational Area member jurisdictions, participating non-profits and area partners with access to shared calendaring, message boards, contact lists, plan templates and more. The presentation will feature a live demo of PrepareOC.

“Disaster Communications”, presented by Kim Fieux, Western Region Account Manager, Dialogic Communications Corp (DCC)
It’s midnight and your business, organization or community is threatened by a disaster event that threatens the well being of individuals and families as well as your critical operations. How will you get word out to mobilize your emergency management team as quickly as possible. What will you do to ensure others are notified of the event?
The recent disasters have reinforced the need for comprehensive crisis response strategies with proactive communications at their core. This presentation will demonstrate how emergency notification technology is a proven and viable means for controlling the flow - and integrity - of information in disaster. It will also explain how such a solution works and will share applications and uses, helping any organization maintain business continuity and ensure employee well-being when faced with a disaster threat.

“The Business Case for BCM Software: Three Factors”, presented by Chris Alvord, CEO, COOP Systems
Large organizations are increasing concerned with their enterprise risk exposure of all types, including operational risk factors like information technology, people, processes, business relationships, physical assets, sales, marketing, supply chain, business interruption, health & safety, and fraud. Business Continuity Management (BCM) software is a key contributor to the mitigation of operational risk.
Surprisingly, despite the many benefits, organizations often fail to use BCM software, settling for Word and Excel documents. To BCM practitioners, the need for a software package to help their programs is obvious. Senior management frequently does not see the same benefits. How do BCM practitioners make a convincing case for their needs?

"Planning for Health Disasters"
For some, the recent swine flu outbreak provided an opportunity to exercise pandemic response plans. It was also a discovery that plans based solely on the World Heath Organization alert did not take into account severity of the incident. For others, this was a wake up call to develop emergency response plans, as well as business recovery plans in preparation for a health disaster that disrupts critical business operations.
The August ACP-OC program will cover preparedness and recovery planning for health emergencies such as pandemic influenza as well as bio-terrorism (anthrax, small pox etc.) and other events. Presentations will be delivered by:
· Sadina Renaldo, Ph.D., Deputy Director, Pandemic Influenza Unit, LA County, Dept, of Public Health
